I. POLICY

The Bedford Public Library System will maintain basic procedures to provide for the safety and security of library patrons and library staff during emergency or hazardous situations.

II. APPLICABILITY

Library employees and members of the public who may be in library facilities during emergency situations

III. OBJECTIVE

To minimize injury and damage during emergency or hazardous situations
To facilitate communications with emergency services agencies

IV. PROCEDURES

• Each library location will have:

• an adequately stocked first aid kit

• fire extinguishers that are operational

• a battery operated radio and flashlight

• Each library location will maintain an emergency folder containing current information relating to:

• employee emergency contact information (form attached)

• emergency services telephone numbers (form attached)

• locally adapted procedures for specific situations

• basic first aid and preparedness manual

• floor plan of building with locations marked for:

• exits

• emergency supplies

• fire extinguishers

• smoke detectors

• ladders

• first aid kit

• utility shutoffs

• Each library location will establish a site for regrouping in case the building is evacuated.
