Lily and Pink
From sunsets enveloping the sky to water lilies floating on a neighbor’s pond, Vargas finds inspiration in both grand and subtle motifs. An emerging artist who grew up on the Bedford County side of Smith Mountain Lake, Mary Peterson Vargas now resides in both Virginia and New England. Her oil paintings reflect the rural landscapes of these regions. Working almost exclusively in oils allows her to manipulate, push, and sometimes scrape the slow-drying paint around the canvas until she achieves the effect she desires. Primary a self-taught artist, Vargas studies the works of her favorite contemporary painters including Donald Jurney of Massachusetts and Marc Dalessio, (an American living abroad) and past masters such as Childe Hassam and Aldro T. Hibbard to refine her style. Paintings by Mary Peterson Vargas may be viewed Monday, April 2 through Monday, April 30, 2018 in the MOarts Gallery during library hours at the Moneta/ Smith Mountain Lake Library. The library is located at 13641 Moneta RD, Moneta, Virginia.
