"Stronger" a charcoal portrait by Jon Murrill

The MOarts Gallery Presents Jon Murrill’s Art Exhibition
December 2017 through January 2018

Extreme in detail and size, Murrill’s charcoal portrait series has great impact, confronting the viewer with everyday faces featuring all the rough edges and most hair out of place. Murrill affirms that, “Overall, my work does not represent an idealistic beauty.” His insightful art reaches into the realm of the self, somehow grasping a moment when heart and life are visible in the wrinkles, the unusual shape of the face, and a light in the eyes.  A versatile artist, Jon Murrill is adept in many different media and has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Radford University and a professional teaching certificate in Visual Arts.  Since 2012, Murrill has worked as an adjunct instructor in drawing, art history and watercolor at Virginia Western Community College and as an art instructor in Roanoke high schools. In his artist biography he states that “Through teaching I hope to create a passion for art among the many students that I instruct.”   He has shown his work in fine arts centers, museums, and juried exhibitions throughout Virginia and the East coast. His website: www.murrillart.com has examples of his art including watercolors, oils, and charcoal drawings.
